Player ratings for Wolves vs Brighton | Away End Analysis

A fantastic win on the road, but let’s analyse the players one by one…

Brajan Gruda and Danny Welbeck will steal the headlines for their goals to see out a huge victory on the road. Three points that could be vital towards qualification for the Europa Conference League, but there are more players on the pitch!

Who caught the eye?

Bart Verbruggen – 8

Mats Wieffer – 9

Adam Webster – 7

Jan Paul Van Hecke – 7

Pervis Estupiñan – 7

Carlos Baleba – 6

Yasin Ayari – 6

Matt O’Riley – 7.5

Yankuba Minteh – 6.5

Danny Welbeck – 8

Tariq Lamptey – 6.5

Brajan Gruda – 8.5

Simon Adingra – 7.5

Diego Gomez – 5

Kaoru Mitoma – 5

Jack Hinshelwood – N/A

Don’t worry, every decision is justified! For me, Mats Wieffer stole the show for his work rate both defensively and offensively.

Wieffer statistically dominant via Squawka as well as excellent on the eye:

  • Most touches (39)
  • Most duels won (8)
  • Most tackles (5)
  • Most fouls won (2)
  • Won the penalty for 1-0

Brajan Gruda and Bart Verbruggen steal my other stand-out scores for the week. Gruda, for rather obvious reasons. His first goal in the blue and white stripes, as well as an all-rounded good performance after replacing Tariq Lamptey in the 59th minute.

Verbruggen had another superb weekend with some huge saves, particularly in the first half. Stopping Matheus Cunha from outside the area, and preventing a follow up after a dangerous deflected ball across goal stood out as game defining moments in-between the sticks.

Danny Welbeck scored his penalty shortly after being controversially disallowed his opener. Welbeck had a good game, heavily contributing towards a huge victory on the road again. He also hit 10 goals for the first time in a Premier League season in his career!

My low ratings for Mitoma and Gomez were only due to small sample size, with Carlos Baleba and Yasin Ayari not having their best games this season. Ayari felt slightly lightweight in comparison to a strong Wolves midfield, with a lot of recoveries being made up behind the midfield (boosting Wieffer’s rating!)

Baleba had a mixed game.

The newly crowned Young Player of the Season was subject to ounces of naivety, giving away posession cheaply and not having his usual high standard game. Perhaps our superstar Cameroonian has set the bar too high for himself!

Overall, a strong team performance, and one that we could look back on at the end of the season as European defining.
